What is spatial reasoning?

Spatial reasoning is the ability to picture, turn and compare shapes in your mind. In 1971 Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler showed that people mentally rotate objects at a steady speed - the more an object is turned, the longer it takes to compare. Strong spatial skills are linked with success in engineering, architecture, surgery, design and the sciences.

  • Mental rotation - which shape is the same, only turned?
  • Mirror images - spot the one that has been flipped.
  • Orientation - directions, reflections and cubes.
