What is emotional intelligence (EQ)?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise, understand and manage emotions - your own and other people's. The idea was introduced by psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer in 1990 and made famous by Daniel Goleman's 1995 book Emotional Intelligence. Many people see it as a key ingredient of good leadership, teamwork and relationships.

The 4 EQ skills this test measures

  • Self-awareness - noticing what you feel and why.
  • Self-management - staying calm and flexible under pressure.
  • Social awareness - empathy and reading the room.
  • Relationship skills - conflict, feedback and trust.

Instead of asking you to rate yourself, the test puts you in 20 everyday situations. Each choice is scored by how emotionally intelligent it is, and your report explains the best response to every situation.
